The risk of losing a well due to hole stability issues or losing a tool such as the MDT due to differential sticking have not disappeared. Drilling a vertical well at M2 will help, but I am not sure if they have decided to use synthetic oil based mud for the Upper and Lower Angwa to reduce hole stability issues? In addition, based on very few pretest pressures from well M1-ST, how confident are they regarding the accuracy of the multi-zone formation pressures, and hence mud overbalance at M2?

Alternatively, on future wells it might be worth checking if it is possible to drill, log and case the upper half of the well in the 8.5" section, then drill the lower half using a 6" bit followed by hole opening (under reaming) to 8.5" hole, run a slimmed down version of the MDT or equivalent through the 7" liner to access the open hole section? Having a cased off section over the PA and UA would help minimize logging problems over the LA.
