I hate to burst everyones bubble here but Captain Cook was never the first European person to inhabit Australia.
Yes - he claimed Australia in the name of the British Crown, the eastern side of it at least, however two Dutchmen where in fact the first inhabitants of Australia.
These two were off the Dutch ship The Batavia. On 4 June the ship struck a reef near Beacon Island part of the Houtman Abrolhos off the Western Australian coast not far from where modern day Geraldton is located.
Wouter Loos and a cabin boy, considered only minor offenders to murders of the island, were marooned on mainland Australia, never to be heard of again. Reports of unusually light-skinned Aborigines in the area by later British settlers have been suggested as evidence that the two men might have been adopted into a local Aboriginal clan.
A little known fact that most history book over look.
