"I wonder how much core has been sent and analysed...
and if is from original drill, side track or both.....
we are nevertheless talking about hundreds of meters of core and considering the many layers of pay zones,
analyses of core would be closely spaced bit by bit ?!"
Luciano, I think you're confusing sidewall cores with full hole cores.
Sidewall cores are small cylinders of rock cut from the side of the bore hole using a wireline conveyed coring tool. Depending on the type of tool being used side wall cores are generally 25-40mm in diameter and 50-60mm in length. 30-50 sidewall cores are cut in a single run with the tool with exact number depending on type of magazine run with the tool. A sidewall core is a small sample of the formation taken at a point in the hole.
Full hole cores are cut by replacing the drill bit and drilling BHA with a coring bit and a core barrel. Full hole cores vary in diameter depending on the diameter of the hole. Generally a 5-1/4" OD core would be cut with a 12-1/4" OD coring bit and a 4" OD core with an 8-1/2" coring bit. Length of core will vary according to length of coring barrel and other factors..but will generally vary from 6m up to 54m+. A full hole core is a continuous sample of rock taken through a reservoir and is the best possible representative sample that can be taken of the rock being drilled.
While a full hole core is the best sample you can hope to acquire of reservoir rock cutting full hole cores requires lots of rig time (two trips plus core cutting time) and there is also alot of work involved in processing the core when it comes to surface. Sidewall cores require alot less rig time to acquire and are much easier to handle at surface than a fullhole core.
