Actually, about 85 per cent of the workforce regards unions as irrelevant. Most prefer to negotiate directly with their employer, cutting out the fat cat union secretaries and their slavish adherence to the Australian Labor Party, which has become the party of corporate and public service elites.
Union membership is thankfully down to fewer than 13 per cent of Australia's employees/contractors.
Unfortunately they continue to have a stranglehold on some essential services, hobbling the economy.
We can't afford a wage/price spiral but militant union leaders are so economically illiterate that they'll never realise how this hits the least affluent in society the hardest.
I respect rail employees but they have to realise obtaining CPI wage rises is not in their best interests, as it creates a situation similar to a dog chasing its tail.
