Well mate, my original comment was talking specifically about weapon systems being used within Defence, ie: the Australian Defence Force. I said that "No weapon system can be used in Defence without a NATO stock number". This is correct; no firearm, tank, ship, whatever that currently gets used by ADF, could be used unless it's codified first. Every small-arms weapon currently used in the Army, including bayonets and other attachments, are codified.

The same goes for body armor.

Tampons, while amusing, aren't exactly a relatable comparison to Droneshield because
1. Tampons are Pers consumables and not an asset.
2. Tampons are not a weapon system unless you throw it very, very hard.

Sidenote: Tampons are codified so that they can be ordered bulk with guaranteed availability for the purpose of humanitarian aid, as well as to have on supply within ADF medical centres. Easier to buy by the pallet for humanitarian aid than to clear out your local woolworths.

And regarding AK47s; they currently have a NATO Stock Number. Historically they may not have been assigned when first introduced as they predate the NATO codification system (came out in the 1950s), but now they do. This is however irrelevant within the ADF as AK47 is not a weapon system utilised within the ADF. You will not see an AK47 within any accounting system, or within any base armory register (unless it's a fully-deserviced trophy on a plaque).

Regarding Droneshield; majority of their items would be considered a weapon system. They would not be able to be managed and used within ADF outside of trials, without first getting codified. This step is now done.
