that I was 'forced' to pay 50 bucks for the privilege

but -- my own embassy doesn't accept Australian currency ------------ the payment had to be in US dollars, new not old notes.

As to charging fees ---------- my god. Try doing anything at all with property in Australia in so many places - or buying services.
