    Hi

Some good points - I walk my dog in the mornings and it makes it much easier to stay slim(mish) and fit. I also meet a lot of people and one of those put me right on things like flaxseed oil and hydrogenated fats. I have been using ground flax seed in bread for years; as a cosmetic paste when young - good for pimples!! looks funny though; and it's great sprinkled on raw oats and soaked overnight, but apparently it isn't that great for men.

NOW my friend Vince (from the dog-walking round) lent me this book and, yes it says all those things about fats you have mentioned, but the fats and oils used for margarines also have to be hardened before you get the spreading consistency required hence there is always a minimum percentage of hydrogenated fats in every tub of margarine. When buying margarines, read the fine print which gives you the percentage of hydrogenated fats. The dark paste which eventually becomes margarine also has to be bleached.

Olive oil, when used for frying, also heats up very quickly to the point where it hydrogenates. If you pre-fry or sautee your meats either do it in butter, or add some butter to the olive oil and don't let it get too hot. Only use Virgin olive oil and keep it moustly for your salads.

Peanut oil can be heated much higher than other oils before hydrogenating; so if you must fry, use this and toss out what's left in your pan when finished. As soon as you see smoke, it's hydrogenating. Sunflower oil is also good.

I don't eat a lot of fried foods, but have gone back to using butter for sauteeing. The only margarine I use is Nuttelex (the first version) - it's got the lowest hydrogenated content of all margarines.

Flax seed oil apparently has a substance which is bad for the prostrate gland - I rather like the taste in bread, but I am not a man, so it's o.k. for me. It's better to use fish-oils and good old-fashioned sardines and salmon to get your omega 3. Codliver oil is also very good.

Something really good for men is Pumpkin seed oil (to be used raw as a daily medication or on salads)- you get it in some continental delis - it comes from Yugoslavia and Austria - or munch the seeds as a tasty snack.

Diabetes cure? only eat when hungry, keep away from too much bread and sweets and use sugar as you would any other spice, sparingly.

    Cheers

    Taurisk
