oh. You don't understand friction. Are you familiar with drag on aircraft surfaces? Air resistance that causes meteors to burn when they hit the atmosphere? That sort of thing?
These things are examples of friction. Air molecules interact with other matter... including other air molecules. This drag causes air at the top of the atmosphere to follow the rotation of the earth.
Obviously it's not 100% in synch, but it' definitely trends in much the same way.
