I have worked in a plant that was over 60yrs old and yet it has run consistently in the last 10yrs at 30% over its original design specs.
Rather than add parts for greater efficiency it has had them removed to achieve that.
It was only designed with a 30yr life.
It is still going strong and has capacity spare.
Technology and innovation change the dynamics of everything.
I remember a friend who used a better direct bolt on carb on his Ford model A for twice the original fuel economy.it was only made from memory 5yrs later by ford so was still archaic.
A new car is not necessarily mechanically as good as it's 10yr old model well serviced.
Many design margins have now been abandoned in the guise of being more economic or making things with a defined useful life.
Call it engineered failure.
Electric motors no longer fail by being cooked through overload but because cheapened under engineered mounting plates break especially on new comparable replacement parts.
How many new plants can you name that can make nameplate specs on start-up? Without rework of under engineered weak points.
Only exception is if it's a copy of an existing operational plant
As an engineer I will leave it there.
