I was originally in the sit and hold crowd for DRO as I agree that it is a good stock that looks like it has a lot of long term potential, though I have since changed my mind and joined the short term traders on this one (they are not day traders).
DRO is about as good as it gets as a trading stock because it has good volumes and a positive trajectory so traders aren't likely to get badly burned on the downside. It also has a lot of supporters, regular positive announcements and is over-hyped. When the positive announcements come people get over-excited and drive the stock to unsustainably high levels which offer clear exit opportunities. Often the good news will not result in tangible gains for a long time and the market soon gets bored and drifts down offering an opportunity to buy back in at lower prices and use the proceeds to top up their shareholding and increase profits beyond that achieved by long term holders.
There are really good opportunities to sell when announcements like today come out that are positive and drive the share price, but which the benefits of will not be seen for years. The market will soon forget about them. Also, when the company publishes actual numbers there are often buying opportunities as the announcement is good but the expectations too high (the recent 4C announcement is a good example).
Traders also get some downside protection as they seek to lower their cost base. The risk for them is that the stock gains sudden unexpected momentum that is not driven by announcements and may be left out of the stock or be forced to buy in at higher prices (this will usually happen eventually on a good stock) but it is far better to miss out on a potential gain than suffer losses.
My guess is that long term holders will do ok. The people who buy in on the hype will most likely make donations.
