Every institutionalized belief in history has maintained itself with this argument. Bloodletting was practiced by literally the smartest 0.1% of people for thousands of years. Anybody who questioned it would have been told they had no chance of competing with their education and intellect. Today, everybody reads and can access the internet. Back then, physicians were amongst the tiny percentage of people who could read. And yet, the institution was horrifically wrong.
If your argument was honest it should say "people with a vested interest in global warming, say that they believe in global warming". Equally true, but not as persuasive.
