If younger than 60, do you sell before July 2025, pay 10% capital gains tax before the tax rate goes up, and move your money into bonds or other boring/safer higher interest/dividend paying low growth assets and keep your higher risk/ higher growth low income/ interest assets outside super?
If you are below the $3mil threshold in super, I can understand the apathy. However, I believe the changes will result in future generations failing to create generational wealth within super.
Below $3mil, you can still take risks within super. However, if you ever happen upon a stock like LTR, and you go above the thresholds you'll need to completely rethink your investment strategy imo. Imagine having $3 mil worth of LTR when we went over $2 the first time, getting a tax charge on your unrealised gains for that year, only to see the value of your LTR shares plummet 6mths later when we went back under $1. The government won't refund you the tax you already paid. Even worse, you may have had to sell LTR below $1 just to meet your tax obligation. I really don't think most people have thought through the potential ramifications properly. Once they realise, they will dump stocks like LTR once over the thresholds in in order to preserve capital and lower the risk within their portfolio. The government would argue removing risk from your smsf is a good thing but to me it just removes future generational wealth creating opportunities. Nobody will be prepared to let their investments run once over the thresholds in my view.
