GlobalFoundries bullish on aerospace and defense and the automotive industry. Bring on the wafers!

Caulfield said the market for the aerospace and defense chips made by so-called foundries like GlobalFoundries that make custom chips for a variety of customers, is expected to reach $2.5 billion a year by the end of the decade. “And there’s no reason we shouldn’t get, quote, unquote, 'our fair share or disproportionate share' in that market,” Caulfield told analysts. “And we intend to go do that. And part of the announcement (with Lockheed Martin in June) is about going after that.”

During the second quarter of 2023, GlobalFoundries' revenue from the auto industry was $245 million, compared to $82 million a year ago, an increase of almost 200 percent. By comparison, revenue from the smart device industry that makes cellphones fell 19 percent.

Back in February, GlobalFoundries announced a long-term deal with General Motors to supply chips. GlobalFoundries believes its annual automotive revenue will reach $1 billion this year.

“This is an industry that’s going to double,” Caulfield said during the analyst call. “In fact, German automotive associations have talked about the need for 27 fabs alone in Europe to build capacity.”

Their quarterly was last Tuesday. Someone brought up TSMC building a FAB in Germany and he gave an interesting answer, “In fact, German automotive associations have talked about the need for 27 fabs alone in Europe to build capacity.”

Around the 43 min mark they talk about chips needed in the automotive industry, "low power NVM's for the MCU's, the main controllers, aggregators. We have a very strong comprehensive power portfolio that supports both the body control, LED lighting, battery management system, onboard charging and traction inverters."

    Good times ahead!
