NATO chief Stoltenberg shuts down his top official's widely criticised Ukraine remarks

Now Mr Jenssen's boss has weighed in, apparently giving his top official a slap on the wrist.

"It is the Ukrainians, and only the Ukrainians, who can decide when there are conditions in place for negotiations, and who can decide at the negotiating table what is an acceptable solution," Mr Stoltenberg said.

The secretary-general insisted that "NATO's policy is unchanged - we support Ukraine." He said that was his chief of staff's message too.

The NATO chief's long-standing position has been it's up to Ukraine to choose when to negotiate, and that Kyiv can't join the alliance until the end of the war.

At its most recent summit last month, NATO said it will extend an invitation to Ukraine "when members agree and conditions are met".
