With the performance capabilities announced yesterday (excluding retention) it has the ability to at least compete with existing memory technology, so provide an alternative if you like.
Now throw in the retention capabilities? Well, that means it could dramatically reduce power consumption in every machine or device it was included into. Phones, laptops etc, but most importantly servers.
Data centres currently consume approx 2% of the globes electricity, a hefty cost in dollars & in planetary resource.
Imaging being able to considerably reduce that, imagine the value to the likes of Google, Amazon, etc, and that's just one use case.
$1b? Low ball.
