Yeah, it is a strange company. It acts and uses resources like a government-owned corporation, but then masquerades as a stock listed company that has nothing to do with the taxpayers or the government. A really toxic one. Aussie consumers would certainly be better off with free market economy, i.e. without Qantas. Sort of reminds me of the "free market economy" of the Aussie property market - it's free when it comes to pumping demand ad infinitum and investor subsidies, but killer-capitalism in every other way. Why can't we have real free market economy in this country?
