Do any of you guys hold overseas shares? The reason I ask is I am curious if other countries have a chess sponsorship equivalent where you have direct ownership in the companies (eg through a holding company of your own in singapore for example).
There are a number of interesting defensive shares not listed in Australia that I like for riding out a recession, but the idea of using a custodian unsettles me since (correct me if I'm wrong) holding shares via a nominee exposes what can potentially be safe defensive shares to a new level of risk (that of the custodian going broke) during the exact critical period you want these shares to be defensive.
I'm only new to investing outside the ASX so if anyone has any information or can point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.
