Salvation: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches that salvation is by baptismal regeneration and is maintained throughthe Catholic sacraments unless a wilful act of sin is committed that breaks thestate of sanctifying grace. The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace whichis received through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9), and that good works are theresult of a change of the heart wrought in salvation (Ephesians 2:10; 2 Corinthians 5:17) and the fruit of that new lifein Christ (John 15).
Assurance of salvation: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches that salvation cannot be guaranteed or assured. 1 John 5:13 states that the letterof 1 John waswritten for the purpose of assuring believers of the CERTAINTY of theirsalvation.
Good Works: The Roman Catholic Churchstates that Christians are saved by meritorious works (beginning with baptism)and that salvation is maintained by good works (receiving the sacraments,confession of sin to a priest, etc.) The Bible states that Christians are savedby grace through faith, totally apart from works (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 3:10-11; Romans 3:19-24).
Baptism: In the New Testamentbaptism is ALWAYS practiced AFTER saving faith in Christ. Baptism is not themeans of salvation; it is faith in the Gospel that saves (1 Corinthians 1:14-18; Romans 10:13-17). TheRoman Catholic Church teaches baptismal regeneration of infants, a practicenever found in Scripture. The only possible hint of infant baptism in the Biblethat the Roman Catholic Church can point to is that the whole household of thePhilippian jailer was baptized in Acts 16:33. However, the context nowherementions infants. Acts 16:31 declares that salvation isby faith. Paul spoke to all of the household in verse 32, and the whole householdbelieved (verse 34). This passage only supportsthe baptism of those who have already believed, not of infants.
Prayer: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches Catholics to not only pray to God, but also to petition Mary and thesaints for their prayers. Contrary to this, we are taught in Scripture to onlypray to God (Matthew 6:9; Luke 18:1-7). Furthermore, Catholics aretaught to pray in a vain and repetitive manner, which is forbidden by God (Matthew 6:7).
Priesthood: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches that there is a distinction between the clergy and the “lay people”,whereas the New Testament teaches the priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:9). Furthermore, Roman Catholicpriests teach others to refer to them as "father", a title thatis reserved only for our earthly fathers and God; and the Pope as "Holy Father",a title that is reserved only for God (Matthew 23:9, Exodus 20:12, James 2:21, Galatians 3:29).
Sacraments: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches that a believer is infused with grace upon reception of the sacraments.Such teaching is nowhere found in Scripture.
Confession: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches that unless a believer is hindered, the only way to receive theforgiveness of sins is by confessing them to a priest. Contrary to this,Scripture teaches that confession of sins is to be made to God (1 John 1:9) and to our brethren (James 5:16).
Mary: The Roman Catholic Churchteaches, among other things, that Mary is the Queen of Heaven, a perpetualvirgin, and the co-redemptress who ascended into heaven. In Scripture, she isportrayed as an obedient, believing servant of God, who became the fleshlymother of Jesus. None of the other attributes mentioned by the Roman CatholicChurch have any basis in the Bible. The idea of Mary being the co-redemptressand another mediator between God and man is not only extra-biblical (found onlyoutside of Scripture), but is also unbiblical (contrary to Scripture). Acts4:11-12 declaresthat Jesus is the only redeemer. 1 Timothy 2:5 proclaims that Jesus isthe only mediator between God and men. Here Mary is given the same status asother believers (Matthew 12:46-50). Furthermore, worship of the"queen of heaven" is not a new concept, but was also practiced inBiblical history by pagans, provoking the LORD God to anger and wrath (Jeremiah 7:18, Jeremiah 44:25-30).
The Ten Commandments: To this day the Papacy of the Roman Catholicchurch claims authority to be able to change both “the times” and “the law”(see the prophecy in Daniel 7:25). This isclearly manifested in their changing of the Ten Commandments (the completeremoval of 2nd commandment on idolatry, the changing of the 4th commandment to“The Lord’s Day” meaning [Sun]day, and to maintain 10, the splitting the 10thcommandment in two, becoming the 9th and 10th). Scripture clearly states thatyou shall not add nor take away from the word that God commands (Deuteronomy 4:2, Deuteronomy 12:32, Proverbs 30:5-6).
Many other examples can be provided. These issues alone clearly identify theCatholic Church as being unbiblical. Every Christian denomination hastraditions and practices that are not explicitly based on Scripture. That iswhy Scripture must be the standard of Christian faith and practice. The Word ofGod is always true and reliable. The same cannot be said of church tradition.Even when Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness, he rebutted onlywith scripture (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13). Ourguideline is to be: “What does Scripture say?” (Romans 4:3; Galatians 4:30; Acts 17:11).
