Ummm....yes I understand what GROSS means. The ASIC (and Shortman) data reports total outstanding shorts. That means shorts opened minus those closed. Some times there's an increase (opened more than closed) and sometimes there's a decrease (closed more than opened).
So on a day that ASIC reports a big increase such as 2,652,018 for the 25th of August, that means there were that many more short positioned opened than closed. If you are looking at ASX GROSS shorts for the 25th of August reported by ASX, the number must be equal to or higher than 2,652,018 and I think you will find the ASX number for that day (and most days) is much smaller.
