Ok my view is different to yours... here's why ... Insto's and Sophs shares are worth the same as Retail Investors, the largest amount of share parcels moved everyday are Retail Investors, this cements the actual "Market Value " of Shares and pen-ultimately the Total Market Value of the Company "MC"
Imugene (IMU) taps private investors for $80 million via a share placement to ensure a “long runway” of funds for its existing and future clinical programmes
The company will issue 400 million shares at 20 cents per share to institutional investors
That $80m today has a Market Value of $26m down $54 million ,, couple this to the most amount of Share movement is from Retail Investors..

So you can see why Retail Investors are best kept satisfied and are crucial to a Companies SP and market Cap..

From experience let me say " Even the Big Sophs and Insto's are always concerned about Market Sentiment and that is majority driven by Retail Investors"..

When you are down $54 million ooouuuuch ,,, now with CR even lower and increased dilution,,,,, OOOUUUUUCCCCCHHHH

Publicly Listed Companies,,,, "Your SP is only as strong as your financially weakest SH" .. NZT

I'd suggest you might find a large proportion of the short positions endlessly quoted on these threads is attributable to investors such as these, hedging their exposure. In your example, these same investors unrealised loss on their 20c entry is offset by the gain on their short hedge. They can and likely will keep their shorts open until there is a clear shift in the winds of fortune for the IMU share price
