So could a lot of the buying be from shorts? Well there were 103 million shares short as of August 29, so we will know soon. So if you are short and face the prospect of a $3 takeout offer, would you close your position or hold it on the hope that a) the deal fails or b) enough people bail below $3? One other consideration is by holding the shorts likely have to pay hefty fees to keep borrowing the stock which might stretch into mid 2024. I think the shorts finally started bailing in a big way yesterday after trying to get the price down, which then caused it to rocket up. But since the deal was announced more than 150 million shares have traded some above the takeout price, today as high as 3.05. It does seem like yesterday was a rush to the exits but the volume is still curious, and it may still be that there are other bidder(s) in the background...time will tell, but it sure is fun to watch as a LTR long. GLTLongs.
