The western World of which we are a part has committed to net zero
emissions by 2050 . Our transport system makes up about 18% of
    our total emissions :

So, IMO the "head in the sand" approach to reducing transport emissions
is not the way to go and the increased % of plug-ins and hybrids hitting
the road new should be a salient message to "petrol heads" ......you
    are on borrowed time......

Apart from the environmental benefits of EVs/hybrids, there is
a significant economic benefit to Aus if not to your personal hip pocket.

At present Aus imports most of our petrol and diesel which amounts to
    well ver $30 Billion P/A

By reducing our oil imports by say 70% over the next 20 years by far offsets
the extra costs of EVs/Hybrids and hybrids will function in that transition
in a similar way that LNG electricity production functions as a transitional
    fuel to full renewables.
