Taiwan has been a part of China going back to 1683 although it was ceded to Japan but China resumed control after the war in 1945. After getting his arse kicked in mainland China, Chang Kai-shek "fled" to the island with his troops. So, it is debatable as to whether Taiwan is a part of China or not. I will leave that to the historians. But do not be surprised at a reunification at some point.
