In principle I see no problem in separating the non-religious functions of the church from the religious ones. Having a state financing in any way any particular religion is the first step to a theocracy, heaven forbid (if you pardon the pun). I note that the SA state government is providing the money to re-build the church at Penola that God (?) destroyed with a timely tornado before that church's McKillop celebrations.
