Yes vote entirely carried by young voters, page-39

My best friend and his family came over for a bbq the other weekend. They are all fervent yes voters and wear that proudly on their sleeves.

Whatever, I thought. Good luck to them and I won't let politics ruins this lifelong friendship.

But when the meal was over and we started talking a little, I pushed them gently on why they were so adamant that we should all vote yes (especially their two teenage sons (vegans. pfft). All they could answer was that, basically "it is the right thing to do as everyone deserves a fair go".

So I pushed them a little more. I questioned what do they mean by that. They replied that "we need to listen more and judge less".

I mentioned then that there were approximately 1330 bodies set up within the community right now that worked within the community right now, who subsequently report their findings back to parliament, whose job it is to decide what to do with these findings. I also pointed out that our government spends around $30 billion a year on indigenous issues.

I also pointed that we have an indigenous affairs minister, whose sole purpose is maintaining a standard for the lives and welfare of indigenous folk.

I then asked them how all of this adds up to not being "fair or equal". If anything, it's skewed in favor of indigenous individuals, is it not?

They couldn't really answer and looked squeamish. They just kept repeating that "it's just about listening more and being kinder".

I then asked why we needed to change the constitution just to "listen more". But they seemed to not understand what a constitution was or what it means in a real world sense.

Finally I asked how setting up another advisory body to parliament is going to change anything and improve the lives of anyone when 1330 other advisory bodies couldn't get the job done.

Their answer was "well...it just will".

Later they finally admitted that it was their teachers at school who told them that the Voice is a wonderful concept and that everyone should vote for it and that beyond that they really had no idea of how it was supposed to work...
