40nm was not a platform lot it wasn't on working full functional array. It was working demo cells...
It had a working cell at 40nm in 2016. It's a design that's been successfully manufactured and in 4ds case works in a test environment. It demonstrates their ability to scale the cell to 40nm. You put multiple of cells together on a chip or an array.
Imec's smallest geometry test array is 60nm...
4ds has at no point indicated an interest in cooking up Chips of their own , marketting their product , manufacturing the product and then finding and competing for customers against the industry established corporate monsters with deep pockets. That would take 10's to 100's of millions of share holder dollars to produce.
Developing technology is one thing, trying to build it and displace industry titans for customers and revenue is something entirely different.
