"I personally find Gaurav Sodhi great for mining stock analysis (though he wrongly poo-pooed uranium) and Claude Walker had a great record on tech stocks until the recent bust. Apart from that I don't know many analysts with great track records; join Team Invest perhaps? "
Thanks for the pointers,
@justinp,
Yes, I've heard Sodhi speak and I've read a number of things he has written. I really like his even-keeled temperament. I think he is a very good sector-specific analyst. But there's a difference between understanding businesses and how to value them, and putting together and managing a portfolio of businesses. From a risk management standpoint, portfolio management is very important and I don't believe that he or his colleagues have any, or sufficient, track record at doing it.
Claude Walker I've come across and he seems to talk a good story. But I think successful investors have a certain humility about them which I think is sorely lacking in the case of Mr Walker. Put another way, I've seen hubris blow up many a young buck arriving on the scene with stars in their eyes.
As for TeamInvest, don't get me started on that one. I went to one of their ...er... introductory meetings where they tried to sign people up. Basically, my assessment is that their business model is mostly to bring a whole lot of retail investors together, where those investors get to exchange and discuss investment ideas... and pay TeamInvest a whole lot of money for the privilege of doing so. Oh, and the TeamInvest folk themselves get to hear all the good ideas themselves. For free. An all-round jolly good wheeze, if you ask me. (I wish I had thought of it).
