I dare say with advances in renewable energy it will be a moot point and that's where my bet is.
if there is a significant leap in solar cells technology (like polymer solar cells), coal fired power will be out the window and you wont ever have to post on climate change again!

As far as motor vehicles are concerned I would say that hydrogen fuel cell motor vehicles look promising
