True, and also different regional actors have different geopolitical interests there. In the case of Iran:

Shia background. Current generation are mostly non-practicing Muslims or atheists. Longer history of democratic and social movements. People are at odds with the religious government, looking for an opportunity to topple the regime. However, the society is divided on supporting the Palestinian movement. For supporters, it's rooted in their opposition to occupation - rather than race or religion. For those who side with Israel, it's more about opposing the Iranian government. The Iranian government on the other hand sees things differently. Despite their religious fanaticism, they are quite pragmatic. Chess play using their proxy groups throughout middle east has been their go-to foreign influence tool. Internally however they are facing a revolution in the making especially following the woman-life-freedom protests. People currently don't want anything less than a regime change. Nuclear deal is dead, and Russia (their key supporter) is involved in a war. Turning up the heat in the Israel-Palestine conflict was their way of controlling the internal protests and taking pressure off Russia. But it's a double-edge sword for them. Like I said they are quite pragmatic. In the past, they've been very careful not to push things to the point where it threatens their own survival. With growing internal and external pressure, it may become more difficult for them continue walking that fine line. I personally hope they slip under pressure (without causing a massive regional war), and the Iranian people take over.
