Ukraine energy sector to get £65m boost from German bank

Ukraine's national grid operator says it will receive a £65m grant from Germany's KfW bank.

The grant will allow Ukraine to strengthen defences of the grid over winter and to increase the reliability of electricity supplies.

Russia has consistently targeted Ukrainian energy infrastructure since the start of the war, and that is expected to continue for as long as the conflict lasts.

Ukrenergo said it would use the funding for developing its "engineering defence" of energy facilities and modernisation of networks "on the border with Europe".

"The funding ... will support Ukraine's ability to successfully get through this and subsequent winter seasons by facilitating the rapid restoration and creation of protective constructions."

UK and Norway agree on need to protect subsea infrastructure after recent damage

We've brought you a few updates today from the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF) summit today - and now there's some movement on underwater infrastructure.

Rishi Sunak met with Norwegian leader Jonas Store earlier today at the summit, where the pair agreed on the vital need to reinforce security around subsea infrastructure.

Earlier this month, a pipeline and a data cable in the Gulf of Finland were damaged due to "outside activity" according to Finnish officials, raising concerns about the security of energy supply in the wider Nordic region.

Explosions last year to the Nord Stream gas pipelines under the Baltic sea between Russia and Germany remain unexplained.

In our last post, we brought you the comments of Vladimir Putin, who said it was "nonsense" to suggest Russian involvement in subsea damage.

Russia's "sabotage" in the wider region was also discussed at the summit, with Britain pledging to accelerate military support for Northern Europe, including by deploying 20,000 troops to the region next year.
