We can do without the war but a time in service with any branch of the armed service is beneficial for character building. When you train the first thing you learn is discipline and the first thing you experience is mateship. You learn to rely on others to survive and you learn the boundaries that you can operate within. You also have to keep yourself physically fit. The advantage too, is that we will have a trained Army, Air Force and Navy should we find the need to defend our shores. (again) Things start in the early morning when you have to have made your bed. Then have a proper breakfast, a shave, polish your boots etc, and be on the parade ground on time. Those things stay with you for life. Most of the young demonstrators just lack discipline, and a sense of community pride. They don't appreciate the true value of being able to live in Australia and enjoy the way of life we have fought hard to achieve and how hard some of will fight to maintain it. The same applies in many other organizations such as the volunteer fire brigade, the sea rescue and the police force. It doesn't matter if the person next to you is a Jew, an Aboriginal, Chinese, Scottish, Irish or Arab. All that matters is that you and they are in the same boat. All that is necessary is that they all row the boat in the same direction and with the same effort. (I used to row bow in both surf boats and fours. When you row bow you can see how hard all the others are rowing)

National Service is long gone nursery. In fact the National Service Termination Act 1973 was passed on the 21st of June 1973, that's some fifty years ago nursery. No other Federal Government has revisited it since. Does that tell you something? Cheers AS.
