they didnt find the abalone (didnt dived deep?) and shark fins - so they left
if the French had put in a bit more time/effort in colonising Tasmania/ Van Dieman - we'll all be speaking French now. but like attempts to land in Canada, USA and the rest - the French did fk all in terms of amassing colonies.
