There's a reason why Toyota are the biggest car manufacturer in the world. And it's not by "jumping" onto the next flavour of the decade. Just because it's gone mainstream, the media frenzy behind it, the uproar of fanboys, they're smarter than to listen to the noise.
Their hand most definitely has not been "forced" as you like to put it. They've been onto renewables from before you were in diapers. They're just smart enough to realise that EV isn't the only way to go about renewables and achieving carbon-neutral goals.
