Drilling without LWD is possible. It means you have to work a bit harder interpreting the mud log data but formation changes aren't too hard to pick based on ROP and cuttings and it's usually not too hard to spot where you've gone through a GWC based on gas and shows.

Note that with most tools when the MWD pulser goes down the tools are still recording data to an on board memory. You won't have real time data but you will still have a memory log once tool memories are downloaded at surface.
