As I've stated before, in politics there are no friends or enemies - only opportunities.
I must agree with Silver01 that the farmers have been dealt severe blows by lack of Government support to the benefit of foreign interests and middlemen - ie., the de facto grocery duopoly that persists in this country.
However as our canny politicians can't disrobe and reveal the beasts that they are, they clothe their two-timing with soothing words about stimulating "competition" and "consume-benefit" while the consumer is putting up with skyrocketing prices and the farmer gets as much as he did 20 years ago.
"Consumer" must be political code for Coles & Woolies shareholders.
