I am of no illusion that renewable energy will replace fossil fuels any time soon

Reality is that the energy mix has has changed and evolved over time, it was not that long ago that coal provided 80% of power generation. It's the fact that coal produces so much pollution that lead to the take up of LPG as a major alternative and hence the trend in using less and less coal.

Apart from Hydro renewable energy is a relatively new development and as we see here while there has been slight increase in hydro since 2000 the increases in solar and wind power generation is not insignificant

And we see here that in just 3 years the solar PV capacity has just about doubled in the last 3 years

It's simple economics that with time and scale of economics technology gets cheaper making it more affordable, that is what has happen with roof top solar. We are now at the point that 30-40% of homes have solar panels and most new homes get solar panel put on.

Ever KWH of power produced by renewables reduces the need to produce a KWH of power from fossil fuels, add to that renewable power is now the cheapest to produce

The pace of advancement in technology has snow balled in my life time, for example I recall watching a relatively small grainy black and white TV where now TV's are ultra high definition colour that are just a few inches thick

I think solar and wind power are just one part of the renewable energy future, I see hydrogen and particularly bio-hydrogen as the fuel of the future. How ever oil and gas producers have $billion and $billions if not many $trillions invested so they have a vested interest in delaying technology/fuel that could pose a threat to their business

But end of the day renewable energy will one day take over from fossil fuels as the dominate source of energy
