I expect that Optus should be getting probed as Telecommunications equipment is registered as critical infrastructure under the Security of infrastructure Act 2018. Telecommunications assets are part of the definition. This could lead to significant penalties or enforcement provisions. I imagine this is a significant issue, but reputational damage will be more significant.
Telstra will be probed to ensure they are treating their infrastructure as critical infrastructure.
I know of many business that bought sim cards from Telstra in order to hotspot EFTPOS machines, and to be able to connect to their workplaces for Teams Meeting etc.
