To summarise, I would suggest that EM's patents are so that they will be the only people who can make AKP's chips globally.
Whilst AKPs IP may be securely protected in the west, it is not assured in China.
This way, EM with these patents protects their half of the equation at home.
Working with China in this JV protects AKP long term and therefore its long term value.
