They may be long gone - but clearly replaced by others.
I don't think traders are responsible for the SP position. Traders take advantage of SP movements - they don't actually create the movements.
Traders are also unlikely to move the SP to the low levels it has moved over the last two years. Traders like to see movements up and down within a range - that is how they make their money. An SP in steep decline does not suit their purposes.
As I previously posed, the rise in shorting positions has compared with the drop in the SP. That can't be denied - there in black and white. Shorters will do cross trades in order to make their profits - it is quite well known that this happens.
So, we will disagree about traders pushing the SP down - that is perfectly OK
