All good qoka. CJ in effect stated DC HV was used in the states to supply cities due to peoples angst about HV overhead transmission lines. I unclearly was trying to point out that AC inverted to HV DC was never a tool to eliminate HV overhead towers. Nor would energy companies hesitate to install OHead power lines even if the public disliked them. With the RMS thing I was justcquantifying why DC HV is used. In summary DC transmission has far less APPARENT POWER LOSSEs from AC impedances. This is power that is wattless and is a loss to the energy provider. Also With cabling , insulation for DC HV voltage can be lower rated . AC 240v rms puts more tension on a cable than DC 240 because peak ac would be 240/0.7071 whereas DC is 240V. Seen by drawing the waveform for both, assume AC is in phase current and voltage, and looking at the area of power of both sources. Ok. Enough. But this is purely the reason why people choose DC HV, along with soilid state options and flexibilities and NEVER as an option to appease whingers who hate towers and wind farms. Hv towers with step up, down transformers at the ends have proven reliable and a transformer is about 97pc efficient. They will be used where appropriate. Power transmission cannot be used in the renewable debate where wind turbines are a different story. Im probably facing moderating now. THanks qoka.
