Helium is widely used for leak detection...because it "escapes" easily so it can also escape easily when sampling.

The sampling of the total gas composition is just as important as the volume of helium itself because this will have a large bearing on the upfront capital and running cost of the plant. This can make or break the commercial viability of the source.

A good example is N2. Liquid helium is transported inside a vessel made of 3 vessels (each inside one another) liquid helium on the inner vessel with liquid N2 in the second vessel and a third vessel with vacuum space in between.

So you need a supply of liquid N2. It can either be trucked in from another plant but it is unlikely there is a plant close enough for this to be commercially viable, so it will likely come down to making it onsite. If there is any (and sufficient) N2 in the feed gas then happy days. If not then you have to make it (separate the N2 out of air) which is a large capital outlay and also a large consumer of energy (so increased OPEX).

I'm happy for them to take as much time as they need to get it right and forget about feeding the market.

Oh wow wee, thank you for explaining all of this to me. Let's hope they do find N2 as well so production costs can be reduced. These guys have amazing experience, so if anyone can make things work im sure they can. So it has to be transport in three vessels. Why is it necessary to have N2 as the second vessel? What role does N2 play ?
