The total volume shown for the day (23M shares on CommSec) may very well be incorrect. The maths simply doesn't add up!

There were two large "S3 XT" trades through the day totalling just under 26.8M shares. S3 XT trade is defined (according to the ASX Trade Refresh document dated Feb-20) as a "Special Cross Trade (Same Participant)" - i.e. a movement of shares from one account to another account under the same parent entity.

The total volume for the day was less than the 26.8M shares involved in these two transactions - so it seems these transactions are not counted in the total volume. The curious part of this is that both transactions were not treated in the same way - only one was not included in the total volume for the day. It seems the 17.9M S3 XT trade was removed from the total volume traded but the other 9.3M shares was not. If both of these S3 XT transactions were removed, the total volume would be 14.3M shares....and not 23.6M shares. I'm not sure how both of these transactions should be treated but you would think that both of these S3 XT transactions would at least be treated in the same manner - and considering that these transactions do not result in the change of the beneficial owner of these shares, they should not be counted in the total volume traded on the day.
