I guess as it's only apparently recently happened we're yet to see what the 'West's' reaction will be, if any.
I don't think it's wise to hang your hat on what one self serving Western politician said at a particular time over a year ago and believe that's what the 'West' in general might think about it.
I don't think too many people think Ukraine's perfect and it is still a fledgling democracy. And as you say both Ukraine and Russia once attended the same school....but Ukraine subsequently chose to continue its 'education' elsewhere and in a different direction....much to Putin's chagrin as we see.
The fact the fellow came to a sticky end is no real surprise to me or probably you given his history, track record and the way things are often handled over that way.
It must be a concern for Putin to think such events can apparently be pulled off so easily and within his own border.
