Let's dig into what substrates are (pardon the pun). Perlite is a fantastic lightweight substrate, yet as a standalone medium- Like Jelli Grow - it is fairly useless by itself so has to be added to soil. It gives plant roots greater access to oxygen and promotes drainage, but contains no nutritional value. Vermiculite however, (another wonderful media amendment), does contain minerals that are helpful to plants and is better for water retention, although it does not contain any added fertilizer much like Perlite and does not aid in drainage.



The big difference here is that it that Jelli Grow appears to be the best of both worlds and one that is a completely soilless substrate. That decreases costs right there. Fertilizer is still required (just as it is with Perlite and Vermiculite), but overall the outlay should be far cheaper in both procurement and shipping.

I’m wondering just how long JG lasts? And can it grow these micro crops unaided indefinitely? Drainage obviously isn’t an issue.

Wholesale cost of both Perlite and Vermiculite are roughly around the USD$700 a pallet (give or take depending on location etc ) and then throw in logistics and the price increases.

While with Jelli Grow shipping isn’t really an issue. We’ll likely never know the margins and will only be able to extrapolate with hindsight.
