I created a forum about 13 years ago that has almost 400,000 users now. I rent bare metal servers and compile the webserver (nginx) and php myself, as well as maintain it. It's the cheapest way of doing business. Control panels are an unnecessary cost, so its all done via shell, command line. I use the same forum software although HC has nerfed it hard for their uses.
