As an aside, you can buy all sorts of things on the ASX that are not shares. When buy or sell ASX:NewCo it will be a CDI. You can buy or sell a US share using an international trading account with most Australian based brokers - but they simply delegate the request to a US (or other) broker as the US share is not listed on the ASX. Using the RMD example when I buy RMD.ASX it is clearly shown as a CDI. Alternatively I can buy RMD.NYS which is shown as "common stock" - but this will be registered with a US clearing house/broker. My Australian broker has no role in the purchase other than to pass on the request to the US broker even it is visible on the trading platform.
