USA car sales were down:

The total number of cars and light trucks sold in August was 997,468, down 21% from 1.26 million in August 2009, according to Autodata Corp. The result was an unusually low total for what is normally one of the industry's strongest months of the year.

The annual selling rate for August finished at 11.47 million vehicles compared with 14.17 million in August 2009. Total industry sales fell 5% compared with July."
