I think Exters pyramid is somewhat out, 4 trillion seems very low.
This is a chart showing the net debt of just 7 economies:
Economic Indicator Listing in Year 2009
Total Government Gross Debt (National Currency)
Canada
CAD
1,260.47 Billion
France
EUR
1,487.33 Billion
Germany
EUR
1,745.22 Billion
Italy
EUR
1,761.19 Billion
Japan
JPY
1,032,388.53 Billion
United Kingdom
GBP
951.527 Billion
United States
US$
11,863.19 Billion
If $1 tillion is 1,000 billion then the US alone owes 11 trillion, added together there's at least $20 trillion just there. Add to that again the value of the currencies in circulation and the numbers get substantially higher.
