    Agree, much better to grow your own. I have a great crop growing in the backyard in Melbourne at the moment, but have grown them in Sydney also.

    Very easy, just break off into individual bulbs and plant about 10cm apart in the middle of Autumn. You should see them break the surface about a fortnight later. Harvest in summer then let dry for a few weeks, or until you can wait no longer. They will last 10x longer before going bad than what you get in Coles.

    NOTE - if you want to grow your own you need to use Australian grown bulbs. The foreign bulbs generally get chemically treated upon importation so that they cannot be propagated or spread virus (pretty much what happens with most foreign plants). I got mine from Tassie but many farmers markets have them. A $0.50 bulb will give you about $10 worth of produce, good trade!
