If the Ndpr price goes down much further we could impose 4-500% tariffs to level the RE cost to the highs of 2 years ago. It was still being purchased then. No ,we need governments, as the DoD in the US has done, to kick the tin to get rare earth processing happening outside China and eventually just NOT buy Chinese rare earths at all. Whilst governments big note themselves, telling us rare earths are critical minerals, yet do stuff all and expect the private sector to do the investing we will never see rare earth processing aside from Lynas and a few others outside China. I have to politely disagree but tariffs short term will help Lynas, sure, but China will react with a hell of a thud as they did to Australia during the Morrison years with retaliation. The west needs to get money into RE sector, as a nationalised industry, if need be, and wean our demand from China in a controlled manner. IMO tariffs would cause ST carnage. The private sector, with wheeling and dealing, just ain't acting fast enough. (Except for Lynas of course. ) to eliminate dependency on China. It's an oxymoron for any government to deem a sector of any form to be critical and then rely on the private sector solely to take the initiative if its that CRITICAL. The American government took control of the private sector on a huge scale funding the war effort in WW2 because those times too were critical and the government got the job done by 1945. Today this word critical is a bullshit word bandied around for the media that will come to naught. We are lucky Lynas is moving forward even without government support. NO tariffs IMO, we just need to get away from China full stop and leave them to their own desires. The amount of money wasted on the bloody Snowy River 2 scheme could have been sunk into a rare earths processing facility here in Oz if RE are a critical resource.
